Red Sky Performance: A Wild Horse Brings Together Two Cultures in Mistatim
The Young People’s Theatre in Toronto has developed the play of Mistatim which is a story of reconciliation and friendship. The performance is based on a concept from Sandra Laronde of the Red Sky Performance Company, one of the leading Indigenous companies in Canada, offering Indigenous stories through dance, theatre and music. Mistatim (meaning Horse in Cree) has toured Canada and the United States throughout 2016. It tells the story of two children, one Indigenous and the other non-Indigenous, who cross the divide of their own cultures and develop a friendship with one another through their attempts to communicate with Mistatim as well as each other. The performance is geared towards children 6 and up, and is meant to educate them on the promises and relationships that reconciliation offers.
